Used Oil & Filter Facts
There are more than 450 million oil filters disposed of in the United States annually.
According to a 2002 Filter Manufacturers Council study, nearly 50% of all oil filters are improperly disposed of. Most of these are generated by non-commercial users.
An average drained used oil filter contains up to 70% of its original oil. This can be as much as 8 ounces of oil that has absorbed into the filter element. Multiply this by 450 million oil filters sold in the United States annually, and it calculates to almost 30 million gallons of oil per year that can be reclaimed and reused for other purposes.
Used oil includes lead, chlorinated solvents, glycols, PCB's, poly-nuclear aromatic hydrocarbons, gasoline, and an assortment of trace metals.
One gallon of used oil contaminates one million gallons of our fresh water supply. This affects our drinking water as well as plant and animal life.
Petroleum and steel can be reclaimed and reused over and over again without loss of quality. They simply need to be refined. Both of these resources are dwindling, and cannot be renewed like agricultural products. If we don't reuse them, they will be gone forever.
Each year the United States generates more than 320 million pounds (160,000 tons) of used steel through the use of disposable oil filters. If recycled, this is enough steel to build 16 structures the size of Atlanta Braves Turner Olympic Stadium.

One pint of oil can produce a one-acre oil slick on the surface of a lake or pond.
A film of oil on the surface of water prevents the replenishment of dissolved oxygen, impairs photosynthetic processes, and blocks sunlight.
Concentrations of 50 to 100 parts per million (ppm) of used oil can foul an entire sewage treatment processes.
If the oil generated by all do-it-yourself oil changers in the United States were collected and re-refined, it would provide enough re-refined motor oil for more than 50 million cars each year.
All of California State's government fleet vehicles use re-refined oil.
Many communities have curbside recycling available for used oil filters.
It is important for citizens to contact their local government to learn how they can properly recycle their oil filters and other reusable, hazardous waste.
